Initially, I was adamant about becoming a stewardess and tried interviewing with a certain airline for 7 times to no avail. It was a big blow to me then, as everyone around me felt I had the calibre to be an air stewardess. That was when I realised that life is more than that, and I began looking for opportunities that were outside of my comfort zone.
I was introduced to this industry by my close senior, and the main reason why I wanted to join the financial advisory industry was because of my manager, John Seah. As a very young lady back then looking for ways to improve in life and things to learn, I felt that if I could become someone like John one day, I am good enough. Therefore, I embarked on this journey where I started to understand a bit more about the industry.
Not everyone experiences the same privilege.
I realised that my family did not have insurance since young, but we were the lucky few that never experienced sudden health attacks. However, the same can’t be said for others. Therefore, I want to make sure that no matter what happens in the future, families do not suffer financially — both mine and others. Therefore, I decided to stick to this path, and continue my journey as a financial consultant.
My mother is my strongest pillar of support.
My mother is the one person who wants me to succeed in life yet at the same time, wants me to do it without stressing too much. But that is exactly the reason why I need to constantly do better. My mother is self sufficient and does not require much financial support. But I wish to be someone she could always confide in and count on. On days where I feel stressed over certain things, I would always ask her for her advice, and on days where I celebrate my achievements, she would be the happiest for me too.
She might not know this, but she is someone so strong and understanding that I want to become someone like her.
Learning from others as well.
My experiences in this industry have given me learning lessons for myself as well. As I speak to so many people about financial planning, it’s given me the fortunate opportunity to get to hear from them as well. That is why I feel that having the heart to serve is more important than simply having the technical competencies. When I share the experience of others anonymously, my intention is for them to understand that some things cannot be prevented, but can be well taken care of. As long as we have proper financial planning, we do not have to be afraid of any financial burdens.
As long as your intentions are right, you will go far.
My greatest goal is to form a sizeable team of competent and kind-hearted financial consultants. While I understand the importance of proper financial planning, I also understand that I can’t possibly reach out to thousands of clients to help them plan. Instead, what I choose to do now is to make sure that the people who join me in this journey are well mannered, and well taught. As long as the intentions are right, we will go far.
