I began trading US equities six years ago, driven by my entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to forge my path. During my time in National Service, I dedicated weekends to founding the Youth Investors Club, a Telegram group aimed at connecting both experienced and budding investors. Through hosting zoom webinars, I sought to educate and exchange ideas with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Witnessing the club’s exponential growth from 20 to 2000 members in a short span of a few months, I realized the widespread lack of expertise, guidance, and patience in financial management. Recognizing this gap, I made the decision to join the financial advisory space during my first year of studies in NTU, aiming to bridge the financial planning deficit and empower others to achieve the lives they aspire to lead.
My upbringing instilled in me a passion for people development, which became central to my career vision. Upon entering this field, I envisioned cultivating a young, competent, and ambitious team. With invaluable guidance from mentors, I established career opportunities for 15 advisors in my inaugural year and earned a promotion to Associate Director by 2022. By 2023, our team had expanded to 30 members, with our doors always open to those seeking growth opportunities.
A win-win career
Before joining the financial advisory industry, I ran multiple online and offline businesses with my friends and also had the opportunity to work in Hong Kong and Japan. Through these experiences, I understood that running a business requires two factors: financial capacity and human resources. I know that I could work my way up in investment banking to create capital, but one main thing I would lack is access to a larger network. The advisory business was a dream come true for me as I could pursue my passion in finance, and at the same time expand my clientele through value creation and build a win-win partnership in the long term.
Lead by example
I stay motivated by reminding myself to become a leader who leads by example, and this drives me to do better in this business. I understand that in order to continue to provide value to my associates and remain relevant in the business, I must walk the walk.
Have relentless drive
I believe that one of the most important traits of a successful consultant is drive. A relentless drive to succeed solves many roadblocks like competency, clientele expansion and consistency.
