After doing internships in various companies over school holidays, as well as taking a semester off school, I realised that I wanted a career that focuses on building relationships with people. I also looked for meaning and purpose in the services I would provide for clients, as well as independence in my work and time. I eventually found out more from a friend who has been in the financial advisory industry for some time, and this led me to become a financial consultant.

 

Passing on your heartfelt beliefs to clients. 

In my life, I’ve had a personal experience with a family member benefiting from an insurance claim due to a heart attack. That was how I grew in my conviction on the importance of insurance in our financial portfolios, and I always strive to pass on this belief to my clients.

 

Don’t underestimate the power of passive investing.

Knowing that most of my relatives and peers are not passionate enough about investments to do it themselves, I also believe in the importance of kickstarting passive investments to help my clients grow their wealth, without even needing to monitor the market actively. Passive investments are better than nothing!

 

Shadow your seniors in the industry.

To newcomers to the industry, I would advise to think through what your priorities are, and assess if this profession is something aligned with your goals to commit to long-term. Spend some time shadowing seniors in the industry, to assess if this is something you can see yourselves doing for a long time.
