I began my journey as a financial consultant in November 2022, inspired by the possibilities within the financial advisory industry. Currently a second-year student at the Singapore University of Social Sciences studying Human Resource Management, my path was influenced by my friend Kelvin, who has been in the industry for several years now. He shared the significant impact that thoughtful financial planning and skilled interpersonal communication can have on improving lives. Driven by a desire to innovate in the field and a personal connection to the consequences of poor financial management — something my parents endured — I was motivated to enter this career to ensure others could avoid similar pitfalls.

One of my most rewarding experiences in this career occurred during a client appreciation event hosted by AWM Group. I invited several of my clients to a movie screening, and seeing their appreciation for my efforts and their support for my career endeared them to me even more. It was a heartwarming affirmation of the positive influence I strive to have on their lives.

In my career, Caleb Tay Wei Bin, my director at AIA, stands as a significant inspiration. Caleb achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the youngest and fastest-promoted director in the company, managing a team of nearly 50 associates within three years. His unique insights and mentorship have profoundly shaped my approach and helped me achieve MDRT status in my first year. His example has instilled in me a strong desire to develop and lead my own team effectively.

For newcomers to our industry, it’s vital to recognise that while entry may be straightforward, achieving lasting success is quite challenging. It requires not just hard work but a deep commitment to personal values and the overarching purpose of your role. As Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, “People’s advice is based on their fears, experiences, prejudices; ultimately, their advice belongs to them, not you.” This underscores the importance of seeking guidance from accomplished individuals in the field, rather than being swayed by the opinions of those who lack firsthand experience in the industry.
