I embarked on my journey as a financial consultant in July 2016, starting as a student advisor. My motivation stemmed from recognising the glaring lack of financial education among youths during my own schooling in Singapore. This observation sparked a passion in me to elevate financial literacy among young adults.

Over the years, my commitment has deepened as I’ve expanded my outreach through workshops and authored books on financial education. I’m also in the process of completing the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program, which represents one of the highest distinctions in the investment management profession.

Reflecting on my career, the most rewarding aspect has been the relationships I’ve built with over 10,000 individuals I’ve met. Witnessing the milestones in their lives — from completing national service and education, to starting careers, getting married, and having children — has been incredibly fulfilling. I often joke with my clients that I’ve known them longer than they’ve known their partners!

What keeps me driven is the impact I can make through financial planning. Knowing that my advice helps clients prepare for retirement and life’s unexpected challenges provides a strong sense of purpose and satisfaction. My passion for this work means that motivation comes naturally, fuelled by the joy of helping others.

In this profession, trustworthiness is indispensable. It forms the foundation of strong client relationships, ensuring that they feel secure and confident in following the financial advice provided. Keeping client information private and maintaining honesty are paramount to fostering trust and long-term partnerships.

For those considering a career in financial advisory, I emphasise the importance of interpersonal skills. While financial knowledge is crucial, the ability to build relationships through effective communication, listening, and empathy is equally vital. Be prepared for the dedication it takes to build a client base and establish oneself in the industry, which often requires long hours, especially during the early stages of your career.
