After serving my national service in 2018, I was working part-time as a barista and waiter when a friend from junior college reconnected with me, and tried persuading me to consider financial consulting. As I had an unpleasant prior experience at another firm, I wasn’t keen on being a financial consultant again, but agreed to go down to the AAG office anyway to have a look. After learning more about AAG and speaking to many people that day to learn about the firm’s culture, I realised that it was the right place for me to be and completely unlike my previous experience.

A career of many opportunities
Being a financial consultant has allowed me to break out of the system and explore possibilities I never would have had if I continued down the university route. It has also helped me understand our society better, and on a more personal level through meeting people from all walks of life and addressing any financial needs they may have. My role has definitely helped elevate many of my existing friendships as well, by being a consultant who can help with their problems too.

A strong moral compass is key
As this is a role that directly deals with our clients’ finances and futures, it is important to stay ethical and moral in our conduct. Amongst the many mistakes we make in our journeys, mistakes that are immoral in nature are those that are the most severe and least forgivable.

A vision to change the future
Despite a certain social stigma that came with being a financial consultant, I felt that getting over it would make the world my oyster. I decided that I didn’t need to play into the negative stereotypes of this industry, and my bigger goal today is to eventually revolutionise the quality of consultants in this industry.
