I embarked on my journey as a financial consultant in September 2022, drawn by the profound potential for personal growth and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on people’s lives through financial advisory services. Growing up in a modest family environment, I was always conscious of the financial constraints and the limited opportunities available.
After completing my diploma in Pharmaceutical Science, I served in the Air Force for my National Service, where I recognised the value and opportunities presented by a career in financial advisory. This realisation was strengthened through personal research, which highlighted a significant gap in insurance coverage among Singaporeans and the critical need for comprehensive financial education and planning. The desire to fill this gap and provide meaningful support to individuals and families in managing their financial health was a pivotal factor in my decision to join the financial advisory industry.
My ultimate career objective is to become a financial consultant known for my expertise in handling both local and international clients. I aim to master the complexities associated with global financial regulations and market conditions, providing tailored financial solutions that cater to the unique needs of a diverse clientele. To achieve this, I am committed to ongoing professional development, expanding my knowledge base, and continuously adapting to the ever-evolving financial landscape.
One crucial lesson I have learned early in my career is the importance of clear and effective communication. Many Singaporeans hold multiple insurance policies without a clear understanding of their coverage, underscoring the need for financial consultants to simplify and clarify financial information. My role is to demystify these details and ensure clients feel confident and informed about their financial decisions, highlighting the benefits of good financial planning.
New financial consultants should prioritise building robust interpersonal relationships with their clients. Understanding and addressing clients’ unique financial needs with integrity and empathy is fundamental. It is also crucial for new consultants to remain adaptable, continuously seek knowledge, and uphold the highest ethical standards in all dealings.
In recruiting new financial consultants, the key trait I look for is the individual’s self-drive and commitment to the profession. Given the misconceptions and the purported saturation in the market, it is vital to recruit individuals who are not only self-driven but also passionate about demystifying financial planning and dedicated to serving their clients’ best interests. The ability to see beyond the stigma and recognise the essential role of financial planning in improving lives is what sets a prospective financial consultant apart.
