Having the right attitude.

As the saying goes, “It’s your Attitude, not your Aptitude, that determines your Altitude”. To be successful in any area in life, one needs to have the right attitude, which means one has to approach any task with determination, tenacity and above all, enthusiasm. This is something all new financial consultants should have as they build up their careers in this industry. I started out from the bottom but with the right attitude, no matter how tough the road to success can be, come what may, I persevered through.

 

Managing work-life balance.

My life outside of being a financial consultant consists of just 3 words: family, clients and team. I referenced this aspect of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. It can be categorised into 3 broad sections; One, basic needs. Two, psychological needs and Three, self-fulfilment needs. Our basic needs include food, shelter and warmth. It also includes safety needs such as personal security, employment and financial needs. Psychological needs consist of love and/or belonging. Everyone needs to feel a sense of connection with others, experience friendship and intimacy and not forget about quality time with family. After which comes esteem – respect, status, recognition, strength and freedom are examples of one’s esteem. Lastly, self-actualisation. At this point, one is achieving his/her full potential of growth.

Due to past experiences, I was extremely averse to insurance, insurance salespersons, and especially insurance road shows. I had never entertained them, much less stopped to listen even for a brief moment. Somehow, on that fateful day in 2017, I stopped and sat down at the road show in Kallang Wave Mall to listen to Martin while he pitched. Thinking back, that was probably the day my midlife crisis hit! It was the first thought that came to my mind to logically explain my drastic change in behaviour. As a matter of fact (in my view), Martin was very honest, truthful and transparent in his presentations. He never tried to upsell or offered any plan beyond my means. When I was in a dilemma, he would propose options so I was able to make an informed choice. In addition, he wasn’t pushy but was patient enough to wait for my decision. Most importantly, he did not “disappear” after a sale, and “reappeared” only to want another sale. He kept frequent contact, asking about my family and me every now and then, sending his regards, from time to time. As a result, I had fully entrusted him (and his associates) to take care of my whole family’s insurance needs.

I was so glad to have stopped to listen to Martin on 13 Jul 2017. Midlife crisis or not, my family and I are immensely grateful and blessed to have Martin taking care of our insurance needs!
